Wasabi roasted hot green peas are sold by Mishima in small packages at grocery stores and similar retailers. The product listings state that the wasabi peas are flavored with wasabi powder which is made from a combination of wasabi oil, starch, and food coloring. However, a class-action lawsuit has been filed against Mishima accusing them of selling the peas by resorting to false advertising.

Consumers complained of the misleading product marketing about the wasabi powder imparting a distinct wasabi flavor to the peas. They have added that the product packaging failed to disclose that the peas are flavored rather than containing real wasabi which deceived the consumers into believing the products had real wasabi as their constituents.

Similar allegations have been brought against other companies over their wasabi products. A class-action lawsuit was brought against 7-Eleven in November 2021 challenging its wasabi-flavored snack mix which falsely advertised to have wasabi green peas and wasabi peanuts on the ingredients list. In reality, both wasabi green peas and crunchy peanuts are seasoned with wasabi powder containing mustard seed and maltodextrin.

Mishima has agreed to pay around $50000 to resolve the allegations though they haven’t admitted any wrongdoing. According to the settlement terms, the class members are eligible for either product vouchers or cash payments. The amount that can be collected by each class member depends on the number of qualified purchases made by them and whether they can offer any proof of purchase. On submitting proof, class members can receive either a product voucher or $1 for each qualified purchase of Mishima wasabi peas. Class members are limited to a maximum of five product vouchers of $5 without proof of purchase.

The number of claimants is limited to one per household. Class members can refer to the online exclusion form on the settlement website to exclude themselves from the settlement. They are not required to attend the final approval hearing but need to submit a valid claim form timely to receive the benefits from the settlement.
