How to Activate EBT Card? EBT Card Activation Guide

EBT or Electronic Benefit Transfer cards are used to avail of state-issued benefits including the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the United States. Apart from these programs, the EBT cards also serve as a platform for offering other types of subsidies like the one given to children who have been impacted by the instability of the teaching-learning process and the closure of schools due to the pandemic. These children are given a chance for participating in school meal programs.

An EBT card is sent via mail to a person who meets the eligibility criteria requirements for these kinds of programs so that they can activate it and purchase food from the participating businesses. A brochure is sent alongside the card explaining its usage. However, you will have to undertake EBT card activation before using it for the first time. Generally, the cardholders have to choose a Personal Identification Number but, in some states, the PIN is assigned automatically and sent in the mail.

Since an EBT card is non-transferrable, only the beneficiary who receives the same can activate and use it. If you somehow lose the EBT card or it gets stolen, then you need to report it as per the requirements of the SNAP program. Next, a duplicate card is sent to the beneficiary to avoid possible identity theft or fraud through associated personal data.

How to activate an EBT card?

You can activate an EBT card either online or by phone.

  • Activation by phone – You will find the number to call for activating an EBT card on the back. This is the customer service number and you need to follow the automated prompts and choose the “activate your EBT card” option. The entire process is similar to activating your debit card for the first time. You will have to enter the card number followed by the PIN. It might also be required to enter the billing zip code and last four digits of your Social Security number depending on your state.
  • Activation online – Most states allow online activation of the EBT card. If your state allows the same, then you will receive an information packet with the card instructing how to activate it with your personal details like social security number, card number, name, and address. You can check the list of states offering online EBT services from the USDA Food and Nutrition Services website.

Can I use my EBT card without a PIN?

An EBT card will not work without a PIN. You can contact the EBT card number for your state if you wish to change your PIN or forget your PIN. Next, you will be asked to provide some information for security. Cardholders can change their PINs from most food stamp offices.

How can you get assistance regarding your EBT card?

If your card was damaged, lost, or stolen or you are facing problems using your card, you should immediately contact the EBT customer service number. The USDA Food and Nutrition Service lists hotline numbers and SNAP information for each state. This can be of great use if you can’t access your card. SNAP applications take a maximum of 30 days to process whereas TANF applications might require up to 45 days. If your card has zero balance or you cannot activate the card, then it might mean your application processing isn’t complete yet. You can contact the local department of social services or your caseworker if you can’t activate your EBT card.

How can you get an EBT card?

The benefits of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card are offered to low-income families who qualify for food or cash assistance. You can use the card at an authorized dealer for purchasing food or withdrawing cash. All the states within the United States use the EBT card due to the cost-saving value offered and high efficiency associated with it. The card can be used like a credit or debit card in grocery stores and supermarkets. However, the official name of the EBT card varies from state to state. In Texas, it is called the Lone Star Card while in Louisiana it is known as the Louisiana Purchase Card. To get an EBT card, you need to undertake the steps listed below:

  • Submit the application form in person at your local welfare office for food stamps. For locating the local office, you will have to contact your state’s SNAP hotline by selecting your state from the list on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website.
  • A letter will be mailed with the interview time and date to determine whether you qualify for the assistance. You will have to take all documents supporting the personal information entered in your application to the eligibility interview.
  • Finally, you will be mailed a determination letter that informs you whether you have been approved for benefits. If you are approved, then an EBT card will be mailed to the provided address. You can contact your state’s EBT Help Desk if you don’t receive your card within 14 days.
